Fictional films have a strong showing at Wild & Scenic

December 22, 2011

A common misconception surrounding environmental films is that they are all documentaries. Anyone that enjoys the Wild & Scenic Film Festival knows that environmental films span many genres from adventure, animation and fiction. Yes, fiction! Environmental fiction films are no longer limited to a young audience, although many will be featured at our Kid Film Session. Our 2012 official selections include mysteries, thrillers, love stories, historical fiction, fairy tales and comedy. Below are a few environmental fiction films featured in the 2012 Wild & Scenic Film Festival:

Gloop (UK, 2011, 4 min): Gloop is a dark fairytale that follows the meteoric rise of plastic from its inception in Leo’s gloomy laboratory 100 years ago. Told like a Brother’s Grimm fable, Gloop offers a poignant and lasting message about the price we pay for the convenience of plastic. Filmmakers: Gaby Bastyra & Joe Churchman. Showtimes: Nevada Theatre, Sat Morning (Kid Film Session) NC Elementary, Sunday Afternoon.

Ice (Australia, 2010, 7 min): An out of the box environmental thriller, Ice aims to promote a message of climate change awareness by using the cinematic medium for what’s its best at, affecting people at an emotional level. The film adopts a thriller style narrative, keeping the audience guessing until the very end. Filmmaker: Jonathan Burton. US Premiere. Showtimes: Stone Hall, Saturday Evening; Nevada Theatre, Sunday Morning.

The Huia (New Zealand, 2011, 10 min): It is 1899, and one of the most famous native New Zealand birds, the Huia, is nearing extinction. Famed Ornithologist Sir Walter Buller pursues the huia for his book, his collection, and for Science – but when presented with an opportunity to save the species, his actions are unexpected – and highly controversial. Based on a true story. US Premiere. Filmmakers: Nicole van Heerden, Samantha Wee. Showtimes: Nevada Theatre, Saturday Afternoon; Masons, Sunday Afternoon.

The Shark Riddle (USA, 2011, 29 min): The second episode in The Riddle Solvers series, The Shark Riddle is a half-hour shark film for the whole family. Follow siblings Laura and Robert on an adventure through the pages of a magical journal to solve a mysterious riddle about shark teeth. Meet a raucous group of singing sea lions, experience the underwater game show Are You a Shark?, hear a shark lullaby and discover the powerful and magnificent world of sharks. Featuring high-definition footage of 20 different shark species from around the world, this charming and hilarious look at the ocean’s top predators has received ‘two fins up’ from sharks everywhere. California Premiere. Sisbro Studios, LLC and The Save Our Seas Foundation. Showtime: Nevada Theatre, Saturday Morning (Kid Film Session)
