Inspiring Activism through Many Mediums: 47 Artists Featured Festival Weekend
In collaboration with Nevada County Arts we are excited to announce that over 45 artists will be exhibiting their work in Nevada City and Grass Valley during the festival from January 13-15 2012. The featured art includes many mediums: sculpture, woodcuts, charcoal etchings, silkscreen prints, cartoons, painting, basket weaving, cartoons and photography. The art on exhibition acts as another means to draw attention to environmental issues and inspire activism.
Newton and Helen Mayer Harrison, pioneers of the eco-art movement, will have a large installation about the Yuba Watershed in the Miners Foundry throughout the film festival. Entitled Sierra Nevada: An Adaptation the work proposes ecological responses to climate change on the mountain chain. The piece is currently on display at the Nevada Museum of Art, Center for Art + Environment. Since the entire piece includes a 30- foot long map of the mountain range, sketches of 17 watersheds and aerial photographs, we will be featuring just a small aspect of the piece. For more about Sierra Nevada: An Adaption, or to see the work in its entirety, visit http://www.nevadaart.org/ae/center. The Harrisons focus on urban renewal, agriculture and forestry issues as well as watershed restoration. Their work has inspired changes in governmental policy and ignited public dialogue, making their work a perfect fit with the Wild & Scenic Film Festival. Tom Killion and Gary Synder’s collaboration of woodcuts and poetry featured in their books The High Sierra of California and Tamalpais Walking will be featured in the Mowen Solinsky Gallery. Enjoy their work throughout the weekend or during an opening reception Friday evening in the gallery. For more about Tom Killion and his woodcuts visit his website. Also visit Mowen Solinsky Gallery’s website.
Leslie Guinan’s sculpture consists of hand-cut glass designs in stained concrete, shaped into benches, tables, countertops and hanging pieces. She includes byproducts of recycled Styrofoam and coal-fired power plants in the concrete, captured in art, rather than in the landfill. The wood and concrete stain used in her pieces are environmentally responsible. Guinana’s sculpture will be featured at The Center for the Arts in Grass Valley during a Saturday evening reception or at JJ Jackson in downtown Nevada City. For more on Leslie Guinana visit her website.
David Lovere’s landscape photography captures the grace and absolute beauty of wild places. As a local photographer, his work includes photos that capture the serenity of the river throughout the year. Matteo’s, a featured restaurant for the 2012 Wild & Scenic Film Festival, will be exhibiting Lovere’s photography. Get a taste of both local photography and food during the festival weekend. Josh Miller captures one aspect of the Wild & Scenic Film Festival in his photography – adventure in wild places that does not loose a sense of sublimity and place within a landscape. In addition to his breath taking landscape and wildlife photography, Miller’s adventure and lifestyle work includes humor and humility in the midst of inspiring scenery. Miller’s exhibit will be featured at the Nevada City Winery, the venue for our Saturday evening Gala. For more of Josh Miller’s photography visit his website.
Enjoy what may be Nevada City’s largest art exhibition during the 2012 Wild & Scenic Film Festival. Thank you artists, Nevada County Arts and the many venues featuring the work.
