Host an Environmental Film Festival in Your School!
We are inviting you to host a Wild & Scenic Environmental Film Festival (WSEFF) in your school to raise funds for your school and increase the groundswell for the sustainable movement. The WSEFF on tour program reaches over 80 communities nationwide. The Grassroots organization, PowerUp-NC has partnered with the South Yuba River Citizen’s League to package a WSEFF tour program just for high schools called Wild & Scenic Environmental Film Festival On Campus.
Our objective at PowerUp is not only to facilitate the creation of our youth’s vision for the planet, but to help launch the actual implementation of this vision on school campuses across the country, making schools “ground zero” for “being the change they wish to see in the world.”
Wild & Scenic On Campus makes it easy and affordable to host a film festival screening. We provide a turn-key event with all the films, promotional materials, templates and a complete Tool Kit. By taking out the guesswork, you can concentrate on the marketing and outreach for the event. It starts with a simple application and once we get started, it only takes two months to lights, camera...environmental action!
Wild & Scenic On Campus is a 2.5 hour program of environmentally conscious films. The films tell the story of environmental justice, renewable energy, conservation, climate change and the connection we all share to the earth. The films highlight the issues and provide the solutions building a roadmap to a sustainable future.
By hosting a tour venue, students are empowered into taking action and supplying a stream of revenue for a “greening program” on their campus. The film festival provides an extensive Tool Kit so students can learn how to organize and promote their film festival event to their student body and local community.
CASE STUDY: Nevada Union High School in Northern California will have enough proceeds from the On Campus film festival to initiate the following programs: greatly expand their current recycling program, conduct an energy audit, reduce campus landfill waste, start a composting program, install LED lights throughout campus classrooms, and investigate clean energy possibilities for campus!

FEVER
One of the goals for hosting a Wild & Scenic On Campus tour venue should be to increase your schools environmental club membership and to raise funds to green your school. In doing so, you will create a vision for your school and bring about environmental awareness for not only the student body but your community at large.
We suggest starting a FEVER. What’s FEVER you ask? It’s an acronym coined by a variety of students at Nevada Union High School in Nevada City, California. It stands for Futuristic Energetic Visionary Earthly Revolution! This is a program that just started in the fall of 2007.
FEVER has been established for schools without a current environmental organization or to bring many different campus organizations under one “collective umbrella” therefore creating a powerful and more effective student body. FEVER is about creating a world based upon the vision of our youth – since the decisions we make today have the largest impact on their lives tomorrow. This environmental group is dedicated to make positive changes and betterment of the planet through a unified vision and proactive solutions.
Events like Wild & Scenic On Campus is the perfect opportunity to mobilize your student body around the issues affecting our planet and to unite your entire community on ways we can reduce our impacts. We have developed effective, turn-key outreach strategies to bring your school and community together. Though FEVER is an on campus environmental group, reaching beyond the campus has proven effective in building momentum and the necessary awareness to generate the funds to make the green changes to ones campus.
Standard marketing efforts like postering, emails and newspaper articles will yield an audience of like-minded individuals. To bring together a diverse audience you need to reach out into your community in unique and creative ways. One outreach initiative we have chosen for the Wild & Scenic On Campus is the “BRING A FRIEND / BRING A PARENT” campaign.
Bring a Parent / Bring a Friend
Don’t limit yourself to just your student body. Look beyond to friends at other schools and even your parents. In mobilizing your student body, encourage everyone to “Bring a Friend/Parent.” Promote the “Bring a Friend/Parent” campaign in your school newsletter, P.A. announcements, hallway posters/banners, etc…
It is a simple, grassroots marketing effort that is both efficient and effective. It is easy to initiate and is a simple call to action for students in your school. If every student brought two people and those two people brought two people, you’ll reach the six degrees of separation in your community. We provide several outreach tactics in the festival’s Tool Kit.
ABOUT PowerUp-NC
PowerUp-NC’s mission is to bring energy self-reliance to Nevada City and all rural California communities. It’s our intent to share our knowledge and empower young people to become proactive in their communities, seeking out solutions to provide the needed energy for tomorrow.
Imagine a world powered by the sun, wind, or regenerative sources. Imagine energy sources that do not pollute our air, water or land. Imagine energy being provided locally, creating viable economies that benefit the masses. Imagine becoming so energy efficient we can reduce our dependency on oil and coal so much so that we can end unnecessary wars and senseless and devastating acts like "mountain top removal." Just Imagine. Though this may seem impossible, there are signs of hope and opportunity that were unfathomable only a few short years ago. All the problems we face today can be tackled with technologies that already exist... and human willpower.
Einstein once asserted that problems can’t be solved within the mindset that created them. This truism still applies today as we face these seemingly overwhelming problems. We, as a nation and world, simply need a new mindset: We must begin doing business with a different philosophy, set of rules, standards and goals. We need industry and commerce that use radically less energy and fewer materials. Such an economy will not only provide good stewardship of both the economy and our natural environment, but it will create good jobs.
It is within the grassroots, municipalities, businesses and our youth that our nation and community’s salvation exists. Our local elected officials and community and business leaders must see these challenges not as hurdles but as the most remarkable window of opportunity we’ve encountered since the last industrial revolution.
How do we create this exhilarating economy and the quality of life it will bring? Implement clean energy jobs through free PG&E workshops; inspire students in school programs like FEVER; create clean energy community extravaganzas like Power Palooza; create CFL light exchange programs; conduct energy audits on municipalities; facilitate holiday light exchanges and much, much more.
This is what PowerUp-NC is all about. We go out into the world looking for the solutions we can bring home and spread to other rural communities throughout California and beyond.
