“The Greening” of the 2011 Wild & Scenic Film Festival!

March 2, 2011

The 2011 Wild & Scenic Film Festival had yet another year of successful waste reduction thanks to the generous support and sponsorship of Nevada County Recycles, Pure Water Technology and Living Lands Agrarian Network!  The goal of an event this size (nearly 4,500 attendees this year!) is to provide a fun and comfortable atmosphere for all while consciously managing the resources necessary and minimizing waste streams.

With the gracious assistance and organization of Kate Taft, Greening Coordinator, Lynne Cody-Lacroix and Daria Kent at Nevada County Recycles, Miriam Limov and the volunteers of the Festival were able to divert approximately 100 lbs of compostable plates, cups and serving-ware (otherwise bound for a landfill) to a regional compost facility.  Nevada Co. Recycles’ resource recovery and recycling bins prominently placed throughout the Festival’s venues recycled a majority of the rest of the event’s “waste” while also educating about waste streams.

Local farm, Living Lands Agrarian Network, not only assisted by diverting 70lbs of food scraps from the landfill to instead use in composting at their farm; they also premiered their film Living Lands at the Festival this year. http://livinglandsagrariannetwork.org/

And thanks to Pure Water Technology, Wild & Scenic Film Festival was a “water-bottle-free” event!  Pure Water generously provided their state of the art water purification systems.  These filling stations allowed visitors easy access to filtered, clean, FREE drinking water for refilling reusable water bottles and kept over 1,000 plastic bottles from entering our waste stream! www.PureWater2.com

We welcomed our new festival sponsor, KLEAN KANTEEN who donated stainless steel bottles to Wild & Scenic! http://www.kleankanteen.com/

SYRCL’S Wild & Scenic Film Festival will continue to work to minimize resources and waste at this annual event.  Check out additional “Greening of the Fest” efforts and collaborators at http://www.wildandscenicfilmfestival.org/about/greening-of-the-fest/
