On July 27, 2011, Filmmaker and activist Tim DeChristopher, a friend of SYRCL and featured guest at the Wild & Scenic Film Festival for the past 3 years, was sentenced to 2 years in federal prison, 3 years of supervised probation and a $10,000 fine for disrupting a federal oil & gas lease auction in Salt Lake City. This auction was later found to be illegal by the Department of Interior, but that did not stop the Salt Lake City district attorney from prosecuting him.
