Wild & Scenic Announces 2011 Commemorative Festival Poster & Fine Art Series

Paul Thompson's painting was selected as the artwork for the 2011 Wild & Scenic Film Festival fine art poster.
Wild & Scenic thrives on creativity, and we want to involve more creative people and different media in the Festival. This year we are launching our Wild & Scenic Fine Art Series, which we intend to be an annual event. We are pleased to present the work of six local artists who submitted pieces for consideration for our inaugural Wild & Scenic Film Festival fine art poster. These artists’ works reflect their vision of the Yuba River. We selected Paul Thompson’s painting, and it can be seen around town throughout the weekend. All of the artists’ works are featured on notecards commemorating this year’s festival, on sale with other event merchandise at Fest HQ. Their original pieces are also on display and for sale at the Festival HQ. Special thanks to artists for donating their talent and vision to the 2011 Wild & Scenic Film Festival.
The Artist Selected for the 2011 Festival Fine Art Poster
Paul Thompson has been making art in the area for over 35 years. “Yuba River possesses unique qualities of light, reflection and unparalleled beauty. This river never fails to present a visual display that I find to be a constant source of inspiration and artistic challenge. I feel fortunate to be a part of a community that supports art and I’m happy my art work can help support the community.”
Featured Artists
Says Denise Wey, “Painting delights me, calms me, connects me to my source …. as does being on the river. The joy of painting the river fulfills my passion for both.
Kathy Dotson founded Wild & Scenic and was its director until 2010. “For over 10 years my world in Nevada City was centered around the Yuba and this film festival. Both have inspired me and fed my inner creativity.” Kathy is currently a graphic designer and illustrator and is expecting her second child the weekend of the 2011 festival.
With a double major in graphic design and fine art, LeeAnn Brook has been painting for over 38 years. She had earned over 15 awards in juried shows. For 34 years, LeeAnn has owned Brook Design Group, she features her photos of the Yuba River in her greeting card business. www.brookdesign.com.
John Michael Keating teaches Art at Sierra College. He has exhibited his award-winning oils, watercolors and prints in the U.S. and abroad. His works have been purchased by Marriott Inc., Bank of America, San Francisco General Hospital and Toyota Motor Corporation. Michael’s paintings hang in the Napa Valley Museum and locally in the Eric Rood Administrative Center.
Phil Brown received his degrees in Art from UC Davis and Mills College. He was an Adjunct Professor for Art at Sierra College for 10 years. Currently his work is showing at the Mowen-Solinsky Gallery in Nevada City. “Though painting, I want to reaffirm the value of our natural world—to help create a respect for living within nature rather than on top of it. When we respect it and preserve it, we respect ourselves.”
